I just read a blog on writing and they had this little joke in it which goes like this:

Top One Habits of Amazing Writers

1. They write

It occurred to me that the same applies for good trainers. Unfortunately I think that a lot of textbooks and other online articles are often written by people who don’t train much or, in some cases, don’t deliver training anymore. They are  out of practice and their advice often reflects this.

Number 1 Habit of Good Trainers

1. They train

I know myself that when I have an extended break  – even just two weeks I feel like I have lost something from my delivery. It doesn’t take long to pick it up again but it always reminds me that to stay good (effective) you have to keep on practicing. There  isn’t one top-level golfer out there who doesn’t practice each day despite their track records, skills and natural abilities. Even the Tiger Woods. Maybe he should have been practicing golf a little more.

So get involved. You might have moved into a more administrative role or you’ve been doing a lot of writing or online work, but that doesn’t stop you taking a class or presenting an hour session on a topic you are really knowledgeable on. Particularly if  you are a writer or online developer it is good every now and then to stand in front of a face to face group  and understand their learning needs, requirements and issues. Practice it or lose it!
