Teaching and Money – (what’s wrong with this heading?)

Please read this news release regarding rewarding teachers with bonus payments. How many times do we need to see this debate go around, and around. A great idea in principle but there are so many flawes in the performance system that it will not  reward the best teachers. It will reward a small hand full of adequate teachers who have good students. What hope do you have in you are in a low socio-economic school with the worst performing class with a range of learning disabilities? Teachers in this type of class should get danger money.

Trainers, listen up to what is happening in the school education world because government and private RTO’s will be next. But don’t panic yet, the scheme above doesn’t come in till 2014 and there are two reasons for this, one, there are so many problems it is going to take a long time to sort them out and two, it probably will not happen because of reason one and an election.

This sort of ridiculous concept comes from an extremely poor understanding of what teaching/training is all about. It isn’t all about results and it isn’t about a set of criteria like how many session plans you have written. It is about style, personality, passion and desire to teach. Difficult things to measure. An article like this one only supports the notion that if you follow a checklist you can teach anyone, anything. WRONG.

In the contract world of training we still have the best model. Generally speaking the best get paid well if they market their skills and if your not any good you don’t get hired. How about that as a scheme for schools. Contract teachers? What do you think?
