Human resource management, training and getting a job

I lot of people ask me for career advice. In particular, how do I get into training, full time. This is always a difficult question to answer as there are so many different pathways based on the person’s qualifications, experience and their chosen area of expertise. Maybe I should do a more detailed blog to this one on getting a training job? What do you think? Anyway, for the purpose of this blog I wanted to point out that training in most organisations is linked to human resources. I got my start this way by coming into human resource management via training, then generalising more on all HR issues and then back again to training. Having a good understanding of HR can serve a couple of purposes. These are:

  1. HR will be the group hiring you so understanding what they need and think about is important.
  2. You have a better chance of getting a HR job with some training opportunities than being just a trainer in a company. Initially anyway.
  3. As a contractor the more you know about HR and management the more you will be able to sell yourself, your training and your programs.
  4. With a greater knowledge of strategic HR in particular you will be able to develop more effective long term training and development programs.
  5. You might find that HR is where you want to be rather than just training and it gives you a broader career scope.

Now you don’t need to rush out an do a HR course, even though there are some good ones around. You can just make sure that you know what it is about and can speak the HR language. Here is an excellent link to 50 blogs on HR which may assist you to develop your HR side. I haven’t had time to check all of them out so let me know which ones you really like and think are useful.
