Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

Firstly my apologies for the lateness of the posting, my work seems to consume my whole life, but I am loving it. (Yes I do not have a life) I will post this and another post over the weekend to make up for being late. My posting is more of discussion point for all to participate in rather than information.

The revised Certificate IV in Training and Assessment has now been in place for a few years and I would like to pose two questions in regards to the difference between the on Certificate IV in Workplace Assessment and Training?

My first question is “Does it effectively prepare a person to effectively teach a class?”

Points I consider to be missing are:

Classroom management techniques
Teaching groups at various levels of education
Teaching international students
Tone, voice and projection
Presentation skills
Class participation skills
Key fundamentals of the learning process

Some of the courses such as TESOL and TEFLA include some of these? Does it focus too much on the rules rather than the actual teaching process? I would love to hear what others think about this?

My second question is “All that time and effort to change the course to improve the quality of the qualification, is it now improved?”

Points I consider are:

It was my understanding that they changed the course to be harder as some colleges were offering it over 2 days or 2 weeks? Some of the new TAA courses are similar in duration. Does this effectively cover all aspects?

I recently have had a few inexperienced teachers join my organization and had very little knowledge of the assessment process. Most of these courses were done on line and provided very little support.

I myself studied through North Sydney TAFE and was delivered over 6-12months. I fortunately was working in the industry at the time and found the course to be extremely helpful in my role. However I was not teaching just maintaining the compliance/paperwork components.

So at the end of the day did the upgrade really improve the qualification or not? Please let me know your thoughts????

Jill
