Another ###### password!

I’ve had a number of enquiries from people regarding passwords for online applications. The issue here is the increasing number of passwords we need to have to login to all those handy internet sites and applications. This wouldn’t be a huge problem if you used the same password for every application but there are two issues with this. One, if someone finds out that one password they have access to everything ie this is a really stupid thing to do. Two, some internet applications have certain password rules which means that your one super password will not not be useful at this particular site.

What’s the solution to this irritating problem?

1. Write them down in a little book. I did have this system. In fact I used the back of business cards and placed them in one of those $2 shop business card wallets that easily fits into my pocket etc. I found this to be a simple and easy solution but I could lose the cards and when I needed to change a password it was messy (scribble out – write new one in)
2. Use a super memory technique to remember them all. I haven’t found this technique yet and not sure my aging memory can cope.
3. Use a password software solution.

An excellent blog post related to solution 3 is located here. Their  first option is Keepass and I am trialling it, and it is good. If I lose my laptop I am in trouble, but that is unlikely. I still have my backup cards which I keep at home. This software can be used on a mobile phone (but I don’t have a fancy one) – that would be good also as long as you don’t lose your phone.

Anyway try out the Keepass software and let me know what you think. Let me know if you have any other techniques.
